Sometimes, there are misconceptions about gardening. Some people think gardening is for the elderly or for men or for people who want to “be green.” But that’s just not true.
Anyone can be a gardener and for any reason. Maybe you just want to create something beautiful but lack the ability to paint. Maybe you just need to relax and want to be closer to nature. Or maybe you just want to try to make the world a better place.
Here are a few women that you will probably recognize for accomplishments not pertaining to gardening. But they are also making their mark in the world with their beautiful organic gardens.
For many people who were teens in the 1980s, the name Kim Wilde doesn’t exactly scream “organic gardener.” You are probably remembering her for her English pop songs like “Kids in America” and “Chequered Love.”
She is still active in the music world but after she became pregnant with her first child, she decided that she wanted to create a garden for her children. This led to advancing into new career opportunities.
She studied horticulture at Capel Manor college, designed for BBC’s Better Gardens program and starred in two seasons of Garden Invaders. She has also published two books Gardening with Children and First-Time Gardeners.
In addition to that, she has been involved with the HDRA Organic Gardens for Schools program which strives to teach school age children about organic gardening. Once known for her pop music, she is now leaving her mark in the world with beautiful pops of color throughout her organic gardens.
Also not known specifically for her gardening talents, Elizabeth Hurley is an Estee Lauder spokesperson, model, actress, and organic gardener.
Back in 2007, she purchased a large farm in England where she grew and raised organic foods including meats and a variety of vegetables.
She not only used the products from her farm but also to support other community farmers, businesses, and people with her strictly organic products.
She has since sold her farm but continues to grow organic produce for her family. She is a firm believer in keeping an organic diet and not contaminating your garden with unnecessary harmful chemicals.
Nicole Kidman, another Hollywood starlight, lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, Keith Urban, and their kids.
Though we know her for her beauty and her acting talents we have seen in movies like Australia, Happy Feet, and Bewitched.
What many people probably don’t know is that gardening is in her DNA. Her mother and sisters are all gardeners.
Maybe this one seems obvious but let’s be honest, you can’t talk about female gardeners without at least mentioning Martha Stewart.
She has done it all. From cooking and home decor to writing books and gardening, she has made gardening “cool” and uses her various platforms to share her knowledge of organic gardening with the world. This includes her book Martha Stewart’s Gardening: Month by Month and a variety of articles and publications on her website.
Flowers, houseplants, vegetables and more, she has done it all and made a name for herself in the process. Past controversies aside, those fighting to make organic gardening an important thing definitely have Martha Stewart on their side and she is making waves for the organic gardening cause.
This British actress and vegetarian has embraced the green life along with her sister, Savannah.
She keeps a small cottage garden at her home in England where she grows organic vegetables to fulfill her vegetarian hunger for fresh, healthy, green food.
She also uses her small garden to relax and escape from the pressure and stressors that come with the life of an actress and other business adventures she has been involved in.
